History of Pop Music

Pop music derived from the term ‘popular music’. The genre popular music began to expand in the 1950s with the popular movement of rock n roll. It is said to of originated in Britain in the mid-1950s with a wide spread you movement of new genre styles. The technological advancement meant that new genres of music could be created. There was also a print revolution in which brought the broadside ballad which was sold cheaply and in great numbers. Other technological and economic changes meant brought the introduction of the brass band which produced new forms of classical music.

Pop music accounts for most of the music that is on today’s charts. There is a wide variety including rap, hip-hop, grime etc. The introduction of sheet music was also very popular as the notes were literally written down so families would come together and play instruments. New publishers of sheet music set up and scouted for companies where they saw the desiring needs of the public.

In the 1920s jazz was very popular and later new music derived from Africa was called blues.
Key people in the pop industry: in 1956 Elvis Presley emerged as the world first rock n roll stars. He is one of the most popular bestselling solo artists in the pop genre. Bands such as the Beatles was also extremely popular in Britain and throughout the world.  Not only had this but the arrival of Madonna and Michael Jackson seen them as some of the greatest solo artists of all time.
